Shadow of Diogenes On Morals

Shadow of Diogenes says on his Paul's Quotation of the Day thread for November 25, 2005 -

A lot of people have abandoned common decency and tossed morals onto the scrap heat and replaced them with an anything goes mentality. We see it all around us in today's world.

The Emerson Avenger says 'Amen'. . .

Here is my response to Shadow of Diogenes' post -

A lot of UU people have abandoned common decency and tossed morals onto the scrap heat and replaced them with an anything goes mentality. We see it all around us in today's UU World.

Well said ! I think some UUs do believe that anything goes and everything is acceptable. I happen to disagree with them on that point.

On his Phil's Little Blog on the Prairie blog Unitarian Universalist religious educator Phillip Lund said -

As I’ve said before, the best way for spiritual progressives to regain our moral influence is by supporting families within our congregations and without.

My response to this statement is -

The best way, and perhaps the only way, for spiritual progressives (or indeed anyone else who has lost their moral influence) to regain their lost or diminished moral influence is by behaving in a manner that is clearly and unequivocally moral and ethical in nature. Religious communities, be they small or large, individual churches or whole denominations, very quickly lose their moral authority and thus any viable moral influence, when they are perceived to be acting in immoral and unethical manners. The public can and does smell religious hypocrisy from very far off. . .
